Spent a glorious day with my granddaughters!  We just hopped in the car and started driving. 

Our journey took us from Wrightsville Beach, through Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and to the Fort Fisher/Southport ferry.  A quick 35 minute ferry ride and we were in the quaint beach side town of Southport NC.  A brief stop at Zoe's favorite consignment shop, ABC Consignments, for some school clothes for she and Rachel and we were back on the road.  Just The Great Mimi and her girls. 

Of course, we HAD to see the beach, we are beach bunnies, you know! So we stopped off at the Oak Island Lighthouse.

The lighthouse was built in 1958 for a total cost of $110,000.  The lights sit 169 feet above the water, but the lighthouse itself is only 148 feet tall.  Unlike many lighthouses there is no spiral staircase, just a series of ships ladders.  It's 131 steps to the lantern gallery.

We had a great time looking for seashells at the beach. 

Back home the long way -- we missed the last ferry of the day -- a little singing, a little giggling and lots of memories. 

I've said it before, but it bears repeating.  Everything's better at the beach . . .
