With all the news about the gulf spill wrecking beaches further south of us, it may seem petty -- but I was disgusted to witness a family leave all of their trash on the beach the other night. They left cans, pizza boxes, plastic cups, you name it, they left it. And they're not alone. But I bet if you asked them, one of the reasons they come to Wrightsville Beach is because it's so clean. It's a shame they couldn't be bothered with helping to keep it that way.  

Wrightsville Beach is one of the prettiest beaches I've ever been on. It's wide, the sand is white and powder soft, the water a beautiful blue/green.

 A new ad-hoc committee has been formed in Wrightsville Beach -- Cleaner and Greener Wrightsville Beach. They'll focus on education and awareness of how litter harms the environment, creating signage, learning ways to enforce penalties for people who litter and promoting a plan for the town's campaign to combat litter. One idea is to allow people cited for littering to pick up litter in lieu of paying a fine.

This is a good thing, and you can bet I'm going to be attending some meetings. But it's also a shame that we have to even discuss how to get people to just do the right thing and pick up after themselves.
