As an Agent there are times I feel torn between playing cupid (helping folks find a house to fall in love with) and their accountant (finding a house that they can afford). Buying a home is both a matter of the heart and the pocketbook. One really does not outweigh the other. Your Real Estate Agent should help you find a happy balance between the two.

First, you'll need an Agent that listens, to YOU. Your Agent should help you find the house and the neighborhood that will meet your emotional and financial needs for today and tomorrow. If you trust your Agent, you can enjoy the process, because your Agent is doing the work for YOU!

Next, your Agent should do everything they can to take the stress out of your home buying experience. There are hundreds of details that go into each real estate transaction, be comfortable enough and willing to trust your Agent so that they can handle those for you. And let them help you find a lender, inspector, appraiser and all the other service providers that make for a smooth and worry-free transaction. A good Agent has the contacts in these industries to ensure that your transaction is completed in a timely and satisfactory manner.

Whether you are a first-time buyer or a real estate "veteran", your Agent should be ready and happy to answer all your questions about the market and the home-buying experience. You may need to "shop around" a little to find the Agent for you, but next to being financially ready to purchase, it's the most important first step you should take.
