Here in Coastal Carolina we are experiencing a heat wave. Temps are at 100 and better and we're all trying to find ways to keep cool and keep our bills down. From keeping all the blinds closed during the day to unplugging anything not being used, we're trying to do our part to "Go GREEN".

Here's one way that really seems to be catching on -- solar cooking. Instead of turning on the stove and heating up the house, you use a special oven and the sun to cook your food. Solar cooking means an immediate savings on your utility bills. It's a practical and effortless method of preparing delicious meals and saving fossil fuels, while keeping our planet green.

Now, I'm pretty sure I've mentioned before that I'm "old school", so this sounded a little strange to me, but it's not as "new age" as I thought. In fact, a dear friend and one of my all time favorite people, Sharlene Thomas, has written a cookbook (A Month of SUNdays--Solar Cooking at Home) full of great recipes for cooking with your solar oven. Her recipes can be used with a traditional oven as well. You can check out her site here: Creative Handz.

She's got some great recipes on her blog site as well. Here's one for Chicken and Mussels in Garlic Sauce over Spaghetti Squash: Chicken and Mussels.

Now, I do have to admit that I do not own a solar oven . . . yet. But after reading up on this and hearing the raves of many I'm ready to give it a try. Anything that can save me money, is easy to do and helps our planet is certainly worth considering.
